How Mailing Lists Work

The mailing list is basically a collection of email addresses hidden behind a "list" email address. When a person sends email to the list address (known as posting a message to the list) the message is sent to everyone who has requested to be in the list. This allows for everyone on the list to share in the same discussions or announcements. The process of adding your name to the list of email addresses is called "subscribing" to or joining the list. When you make a request to join a list, your email address is added to the list and you will start receiving messages people send to the list. If you wish to stop receiving messages, you must "unsubscribe" from the list, which means having your address removed from the list.

How do I send a message to lists?

To send a message to a Region F list, send email to regionf-all@swe.org or regionf-students@swe.org . Here is an example of sending a message to the regionf-all@swe.org list:

  To: regionf-all@swe.org

  Subject: News

  Hi all,

  We have great news ...

It is good netiquette to sign your email messages and list your email address at the end of the message so list readers can easily find your email and respond to your message.

How do I get myself removed from the mailing lists?

Getting yourself removed from the mailing list is called "unsubscribing". The first step in unsubscribing is to log on to the proper account from which you subscribed to the list. Then send an email to swemail@swe.org with the line "unsubscribe regionf-all" (for the regionf-all list) in the first line of the body and the line "end" in the second line. Here is an example of how to unsubscribe to the regionf-all@swe.org list:

  To: swemail@swe.org

  Subject:

  unsubscribe regionf-all

  end
