The Society of Women Engineers (SWE) 2011 Region D Conference, hosted by the University of Tennessee SWE, will be held March 4-6, 2011, in Knoxville, TN. This year’s conference theme is “Sustainability: Women Engineering the Future.” As part of the confernce’s outreach efforts, the National Science Center’s Mobile Discovery Center (MDC) van will be at the Holiday Inn World’s Fair Park on Saturday March 5thfrom 8 am to noon for girl scouts in this area.
Housed in an 18-wheeler van and staffed by U.S. Army military and Department of Army civilian personnel, MDC van presentations convince young people that studying science, technology, and math can be exciting and fun as well as essential to their future. The MDC mobile classroom is equipped with SMART Technology to enhance visitor interactivity. The girls will be immersed in the hands-on science demonstrations designed to be fun and informative while using SMART technology to respond to science questions that are appropriate and specific to the topic presented.
The 50-minute Mobile Discovery Center presentation consists of hands-on, interactive science demonstrations and is made possible by a partnership between the U. S. Army and the National ScienceCenter, Inc.
In addition, booths at the Holiday Inn will be set up for the girls to meet with the University of TN female engineering students and learn about potential careers in engineering. This would also be a good opportunity for the girls to determine which classes in high school might be beneficial.
