Meeting Ideas - Region D Best Practices
Nationals Presentation (D061, University of North Carolina at Charlotte) : Create a PowerPoint
presentation on the activities and seminars your section attended at Nationals.
Invite faculty of your college so they can ask questions and meet new members
and possibly gain more interests in the organization through detailed synopsis’
and pictures!
SWE Career Night (D066, North Carolina State
University) : This semester, during the week of the NCSU Engineering
Career Fair we held a SWE Career Night.
We had six different companies attend and they each gave a 10-15 minute
presentation about their company and the positions they were looking to
fill. Half way during the event we had a
raffle that included items that the companies brought, such as USB drives,
umbrellas, t-shirts etc. We let the
companies know ahead of time so that they could decide what to bring. We also invited all engineers, not just
female. We have a small section and we
thought this would be a good event to bring in students and to make more
companies aware of our section. We had a
good turn out and ended up getting some money from the companies as a donation
to the organization. I think this was a
great event that I hope will be continued in years to come. We were unsure of how large of a turn out we
would get, but if we did know we would get enough students it would be easy to
charge the companies to come.
Company Speaker (D072, Tennessee Technological University): Our most successful activity this semester was an event
sponsored by ADTRAN. ADTRAN sent
Elizabeth Doty, an electrical engineer, to share with the students “A day in
the life of a woman engineer.” About 20
students were present for the speech.
Everyone really seemed to enjoy her message and asked lots of
questions.
