The primary housing facility will be the Four Points Hotel, which is conveniently located adjacent to Bryant Conference Center. Even though the Four Points Hotel will be considered the main housing facility, a list of alternatives will be provided, such as the Hampton Inn and Holiday Inn Express, which are located a few miles from the Bryant Conference Center. Tuscaloosa is located approximately one hour from Birmingham International Airport, so flying needs can be easily met. Rental cars are available at Airport terminals with an advance reservation from companies such as Hertz and Avis for the drive into Tuscaloosa along I-59. Dates March 2nd through March 4th Expenses The registration fee will be $55 (collegiate) and $80 (professional) for members who meet the early registration deadline. The hotel cost per room (Four Points) at this time is $100. Other local hotels may be less expensive. Potential Sponsorship Corporate sponsorship of booths at the career fair will provide the majority of financial support needed to host the 2007 Region D Conference. In the 1999 Region Conference hosted by UA, corporate sponsorship encompassed more than 40% of total UA SWE conference income. With additional SWE alumni over the ensuing years, we believe that additional corporate sponsorship can be attracted. Organization In anticipation of receiving the 2007 bid, UA SWE has begun planning a tentative program for the conference. The traditional program format, which includes a career fair, will be utilized. There are plans of running four parallel sessions, probably in four sets, with a total of sixteen. The proposed theme is “Engineering Tomorrow’s Infrastructure”. This theme will expose SWE members to future technology across the engineering spectrum, instill an appreciation for interdisciplinary engineering, and provide additional personal growth through seminars focusing on professionalism and its relationship to successfully working in a multidisciplinary environment. This may also incorporate the UA Aging Infrastructure Center of Excellence which specializes in mitigating the effects of age on the nation’s infrastructure. The UA SWE student section, over 50 members, will host and plan the conference to accommodate 200 to 300 attendees through four sub-committees: Publicity/Registration, Corporate Relations, Speaker/Programs, and Local Arrangements. A link from the UA SWE website will provide information regarding registration, hotel alternatives, and scheduling for the 2007 conference beginning six months prior to the conference. UA faculty, who are also members of the Birmingham SWE section, will provide advice and assistance to students throughout the conference. In addition to the effort of UA SWE, the Bryant Conference Center staff will assist. If our enthusiasm in hosting the 1999 Conference is not reason enough to choose UA to host the 2007 Region D Conference, then our presence in SWE and on the UA campus as a leading student professional group should further recommended us. UA SWE has received several SWE awards, including, but not limited to, “Outstanding Student Section: 1st Place—Medium Section” and “Best Student Section: Region D”. The University of Alabama Coordinating Council for Student Organizations has also repeatedly selected UA SWE as the “Most Creative” and “Outstanding Technical Society” on campus. In addition, our new Dean, Dr. Charles L. Karr, a speaker from the 1999 regional conference and 2003 national conference, believes that SWE is the most active student organization on the UA campus. We have met with Dr. Karr, and he is also supporting our 2007 conference bid.
