Navigating
Your Career Without Losing Yourself Rebecca Rhoads, Raytheon Chief Information
Officer Presentation Description: If only there were GPS units to
help us find our ultimate career destination! They get us from point A to
point B on the road, but inside the office we must sometimes fend for
ourselves. The path to the top wasn't a straight line for Rebecca Rhoads,
Raytheon's Chief Information Officer (CIO). There were a number of detours
and occasionally roadblocks to overcome. Early on, she discovered that by
embracing opportunities that lurked within the former and by always learning
lessons from the latter, she could evolve her own GPS map. During this

dominated by men. About the Speaker: Rebecca R. Rhoads is vice president and chief information officer of Raytheon
Company. She was elected to her
current position in April 2001.

With headquarters in As chief information officer, Rhoads provides expert counsel to senior
management, and is responsible for Information Technology (IT) strategy,
functions, processes, and people company-wide and globally. This includes IT architecture, systems,
networks, investments, information protection and assurance, and IT supplier
relationships. Information Technology
is used in the sale, design, build, procurement, delivery, and support of all
Raytheon products and services. Previously, Rhoads was vice president of Information Technology for
Raytheon’s Electronics Systems business.
In this role she was responsible for all aspects of Information
Technology in support of business requirements including development,
direction and implementation of segment-wide information systems. Prior to that position, she directed
engineering organizations in test systems design, systems reliability, safety
and product effectiveness engineering, and manufacturing engineering. Rhoads has more than 29 years of experience within the defense
industry. She began her career with
General Dynamics in 1979 as an electrical engineer, designing automated test
systems for RAM and Stinger missile programs.
She worked in Engineering and in Operations, holding various
assignments of increasing responsibility at General Dynamics, Hughes, and
Raytheon. In addition, Rhoads taught
electrical engineering classes at Rhoads currently serves on the Aerospace Industries Association
e-Business Executive Steering Group, the CIO Editorial Advisory Board, the
IBM Board of Advisors, the Advisory Council for She has been recognized throughout her career with various Engineering
and Eagle Excellence awards, Corporate America Top 100 Influential Leaders,
CIO Hall of Fame, Women to Watch, Women of Distinction, Top 50 Women in
Technology and California Polytechnic University Engineering Distinguished
