15 Minute MBA

 

Panel Description:

This workshop will start with a presentation on MBA highlights what are the business fundamentals you really need to know?  There will next be a panel discussion with SWE members who earned their MBAs or the equivalent business courses in a variety of ways:  part-time, full-time, and as part of an executive program.  This presentation is geared to those considering business school or who want to learn more about business fundamentals.

 

About the Panelists:

  

Pat Quigley Shaw has Bachelor degree in Chemical Engineering from the University of Delaware.  She joined SWE while in college, has held positions in the Boston Section and is a life member.  She started her career as an engineer making plastics for Borg-Warner Chemicals, and then was recruited (at a SWE convention) to work as a Quality Engineer for Polaroid Corporation, where she started her MBA in the evenings.  Pat joined Digital Equipment Corporation in 1980 and finished her MBA at Boston University in 1985.   Her positions at Digital included Senior Engineer, CIM Applications Manager and Far East CIM Applications Manager based in Singapore.  She has now been with Avid Technology, Inc. for over 12 years and is a Senior Program Manager, responsible for the introduction of new products for the Video business.  Pat works full time and is married with two teenagers, ages 13 and 14 years old. 

 

Melinda Norcross is a Program Engineering Manager in electronic warfare and military defense projects at BAE Systems.  She has nineteen years of experience serving in technical positions that require both human relational and program management skills.  She has worked in the areas of missile guidance algorithm development, laser and electro-optic system design and is a commissioned officer in U.S.A.F and served at Wright-Patterson AFB in the Electro-optics laboratory. Melinda earned a Masters degree in business administration from Northeastern University in 2000, an M.S. in electrical engineering from the Air Force Institute of Technology in 1992 and a B.S. in electrical engineering from the Georgia Institute of Technology in 1988.

 

Heidi Shyu is corporate vice president of Technology & Research for Raytheon Company. Ms. Shyu is responsible for the development and execution of an integrated enterprise-wide technology and research vision and strategy. She is a key participant on the Engineering & Technology Council, as well as, the Chair of the Technology Leadership Team. Ms. Shyu is currently the Chair of the Air Force Scientific Advisory Board, reporting to the Chief of Staff of the Air Force and the Secretary of the Air Force. Prior to her current position, Ms. Shyu was the vice president and technical director for Raytheon's Space and Airborne Systems. She has held senior leadership positions as vice president of Unmanned and Reconnaissance Systems, senior director of the Unmanned Combat Vehicle programs, director of the Joint Strike Fighter (JSF), director of JSF Integrated Radar/Electronic Warfare Sensors, and director of JSF antenna technologies. She was responsible for the development of lightweight, low-cost, Tile Active Electronically Scanned Antenna technologies. Previously, Ms. Shyu was a project manager at Litton Industries and was the principal engineer for Joint STARS Self Defense Study at Grumman. Ms. Shyu began her career at Hughes Aircraft Company. Ms. Shyu has received Raytheon's Hero Award, Excellence in Technology Award, Hughes Fellowship, University of Toronto Fellowship, New Brunswick Post-Graduate Scholarship, Atlantic Provinces Inter-University Committee Scholarship, N. Myles Brown Science Award, University Special Undergraduate Scholarship and the 2004 CIE Asian-American Engineer of the Year Award.  Ms. Shyu received a bachelor's degree in mathematics from the University of New Brunswick, a master's degree in mathematics from the University of Toronto, and a second master's degree in electrical engineering from UCLA.  She has completed the UCLA Executive Management course and the University of Chicago Business Leadership Program.
