The Society of Women Engineers (SWE)
is a not-for-profit educational and service organization that empowers women to
succeed and advance in the field of engineering, and to be recognized for their
life-changing contributions as engineers and leaders. Founded in 1950, SWE is
the driving force that establishes engineering as a highly desirable career for
women through an exciting array of training and development programs, networking
opportunities, scholarships, outreach and advocacy activities, and much more.
There are ten SWE regions in the
United States and there are also international sections in approximately 30
countries.
In the United States, SWE has approximately 20,000 individual members
distributed among 100 professional sections and 300 collegiate sections.
The Lehigh Valley Section (SWE-LV)
is one of thirteen professional sections within Region E, the Mid-Atlantic
Region. This area includes New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Delaware,
Maryland and Virginia. Region E also includes 59 collegiate sections.
SWE-LV draws members
from the area encircled by the Lehigh Valley, Scranton, Wilkes-Barre,
Williamsport, Lewisburg and Reading. Lafayette College, Lehigh University, and
Penn State Lehigh Valley/Berks collegiate sections actively participate with
SWE-LV.
SWE-LV’s programs support the goals
of the Society, which are summarized by the slogan
“Aspire-Advance-Achieve.”
THE SWE MISSION
SWE stimulates women to achieve full potential in careers as
engineers and leaders, expands the image of the engineering profession as a
positive force in improving the quality of life, and demonstrates the value of
