Marilyn is the only COR member available to attend the business meeting on Sun at Region B conference but she won’t be able to attend the entire weekend. Cost would be approximately $600. She is in the midst of a job hunt and could possibly have a conflict of dates. Given these two facts, we reached consensus that the money would be better spent elsewhere.
We discussed our current plans for collegiate outreach – technical tour and UEC joint event – and decided outreach should continue to be a top priority. Leslie shared results from a recent survey indicating that one of the top reasons given by collegiate members of SWE was “networking and meeting professional engineers”. Nadine reported that one of the collegiate sections ( Utah State University) emailed us and expressed an interest in doing a joint activity with us.
There are a number of science fairs coming up over the next 3-4 months and looks like we will have some kind of representation at each one-
- Jan 27, Utah County, Alpine – Charter school science fair (Becky Garzella) - Marilyn will be participating
- Feb 25, Utah County, Alpine – District science fair (Becky Garzella) - Nadine will be a volunteer judge. We reached consensus for B009 to sponsor one or two prizes at this fair. The prizes will be Barnes and Noble gift cards.
- Mar 13, Salt Lake City – Expanding Your Horizons (ATK) - Marilyn will be leading a workshop
Nadine inquired about the SWE Scholarship because she saw it mentioned in a listserv email from the University of Utah collegiate section. We’ll be asking for a report of progress in this area.
We found out groups are not being offered space for booths this year, but they do have the opportunity to sponsor small refreshment tables. Given the shortness of time, we discussed the possibility of sponsoring a few members of our section to attend the event. The only problem would be how to make the selections fairly. No definite plan was determined.

Future of B009: Leslie announced that she is planning on leaving the engineering profession and won’t be returning next year as a COR leader. Other officers expressed frustrations at low participation at the local level. We are already running the section with a skeleton crew and cannot afford to lose any more members. This highlights to a need for us to intensify recruitment efforts and offer more activities that are likely to attract future leaders. Nadine volunteered to create a survey with questions that could help us identify future leaders amongst our current members. No final decision on a plan was made, but this will be a top item for our next meeting
