WHAT WILL YOU DO?:
Music is produced through sound waves. Different types of musical instruments control sound waves in different ways to produce the patterns of sound we call music. Wind instruments (like the flute and trump) produce music differently than stringed instruments (like the guitar or piano).
In this activity you will construct a flute out of straws and learn how to adjust the sound. Can you play a simple tune on your flute?
STEPS TO FOLLOW:
 |
Blow across the top of one of the straws.
The straw will make a sound.
Have someone CAREFULLY clip the bottom of the straw
while you continue to blow across the straw. What happens to the sound?
Does it sound higher or lower pitched? Can you think of other ways to
adjust the sound? (Hint: How do you change the sound of a flute or
a slide trombone?)

 |
Construct your straw flute.
Cut 2 of the straws to lengths of 5 1/2 inches.
Cut 2 of the straws to lengths of 5 inches.
Cut 2 of the straws to lengths of 4 1/2 inches.
Cut 2 of the straws to lengths of 4 inches.

9 Straws
1 Cardboard Strip (2 inches X 6 inches)
 |
Position the straws on the cardboard as shown in the
diagram.
Tape the straws to the cardboard strip.
|
 |
Blow across the ends of the straws to make high and low notes.
You can trim the straws in your flute to
