WHAT WILL YOU DO?:
We have many examples of matter changing from one phase to another
all around us. In this experiment, you will heat
water hot enough to change it into a gas (steam).
You will capture the steam with plastic wrap. When the
steam on the plastic sheet cools, it will turn back into a liquid (water).
STEPS TO FOLLOW:
 |
Carefully pour very hot water into the bowl.
|
 |
Add several drops of food coloring.
|
 |
Cover bowl tightly with plastic wrap.
|
 |
Wait for a few minutes. Observe that the plastic begins to bulge
slightly as the water evaporates and the steam rises up to the plastic.
Since the outside air is cooler than the hot water,
the steam begins to condense on the underside of the plastic.

MATERIALS:
Large Metal Or Glass Bowl
Measuring Cup
2 Cups Boiling Water - You Can Use A Hot Pot, A Kettle, Or A
Microwave
Food Coloring
Plastic Wrap
 |
At first it looks like fog, but then the water
droplets start to attract each other and join to make larger
water droplets. These droplets eventually fall back into the liquid.
Note, however, that the fog and droplets that form
on the underside of the plastic are clear. They are
not colored like the water. That's because only the water
evaporated. The evaporation temperature of the food coloring is much
higher than that of water.
