T-SHIRT CHROMATOGRAPHY

OBJECTIVES:

  • Students learn about chromatography, a process used to separate mixtures.
  • Chromatography is used to detect, separate or purify different substances. The process is used in many fields such as medicine, crime fighting and pollution detection.
  • Students create a chromotogram by separating ink colors on a T-shirt which they can take with them and wear.

  • This activity was developed by the Oklahoma State University Student SWE Section which conducts a state-wide workshop annually for up to 1200 Girl Scouts. This lesson has been adapted for the SWE Internet Activities Center through a Microsoft Equal Access Program grant.
