SOUND

WHAT WILL YOU DO?:

Why can you hear many sounds made close to you, but not sounds far away?

You will conduct a simple demonstration with a ticking watch and a cardboard tube.

You will learn about sound waves and learn how sound travels.

STEPS TO FOLLOW:

Hold a watch that ticks close to your ear. Listen to it tick.

MATERIALS:

  • Ticking Watch
  • Paper Towel Cardboard Tube
  • Now move the watch slowly away. How far do you have to move the watch before you can no longer hear it tick?

Cover the watch with the cardboard tube and hold the other end against your ear. Can you hear anything?
