GRADES 5 - 8
CHROMATOGRAPHY

OBJECTIVES:

  • Students learn about chromatography, a process used to separate mixtures. Chromatography is used by crime laboratories to identify clues such as blood, ink, or other substances found at a crime scene. Chromatograms of these clues are compared against chromatograms of known substances for identification.
  • Students will perform a series of 12 chromatography tests and compare their results against chromatogram charts of known substances.
  • NATIONAL SCIENCE STANDARDS:
    Physical Science:

  • Properties Of Objects And Materials (K-4)
  • Properties And Changes Of Properties In Matter (5-8)
  • Structure And Properties Of Matter(9-12)

  • Science As Inquiry:
  • Abilities Necessary To Do Scientific Inquiry
  • Understanding About Scientific Inquiry

  • Science and Technology:
  • Understanding About Science and Technology
  • STANDARDS FOR TECHNOLOGY LITERACY:
    The Nature of Technology:

  • Students will develop an understanding of the characteristics and scope of technology.
  • Students will develop an understanding of the core concepts of technology.
  • Students will develop an understanding of the relationships among technologies and the connections between technology and other fields of study.

  • Design:
  • Students will develop an understanding of the role of troubleshooting, research and development, invention and innovation, and experimentation in problem solving.

  • The Designed World:
  • Students will develop an understanding of and be able to select and use medical technologies.
  • Students will develop an understanding of and be able to select and use agricultural and related biotechnologies.

    SPECIAL NOTES:

  • Although the science concepts and vocabulary are intended for middle school students, younger and older students may enjoy this activity.
  • The instructor may wish to develop their own chromatogram chart using the actual color markers provided for the students.

  • This activity was developed by the Santa Clara Valley SWE Section. This lesson has been adapted for the SWE Internet Activities Center through a Microsoft Equal Access Program grant.
