OBJECTIVES:
You will learn the differences between aircraft and spacecraft, especially
propulsion systems. You will build pinwheel
airplanes and balloon
rockets. Try different types
of balloons on your "balloon rocket launcher". Which ones fly
faster? Fly farther? You can also try an interactive activity
- does your rocket have "the right stuff" to lift-off!
STEPS TO FOLLOW:
 |
Ask yourself, "What are
the differences between aircraft and spacecraft?"
|
| |
MATERIALS:
- Balloons - Different Shapes and Sizes
- Clear Tape
- Safety Scissors
- String - at least 15 feet
- Flat Wood Trim, Approximately 1/4" thick, 3/4" Wide and 60" Long;
or a Light Weight Wooden Yardstick or Dowel 60" Long
- Straight Drinking Straw
- Bicycle Pump
 |
To make the rocket balloon: Mark each foot of string with a different color.
Tie the string to one end of the long rod. Thread the straw
through the opposite end of the string.
|
 |
Prepare two pieces of tape to hold the balloon on the straw. Blow up
a long balloon with a bicycle pump. Hold the balloon closed so that the
air will not escape. Tape the side of the balloon to the straw.
|
 |
Have someone raise the rod so that the string hangs straight down.
For extra height have someone stand in a stairwell above you.
|
 |
Release the balloon. How high did it go? Repeat with different shapes
of balloons. Which balloon goes higher? Which balloon goes faster?
