Engineers' Guide

Skills and Knowledge By Grade Level

Kindergarten (K) - 2th Grade:
At the K-2 level manual dexterity will be limited. They will not be able to draw straight lines, use scissors effectively, write very well, or use a computer side bar scrolling function in a software application.

At the K-1 level students will just be starting to learn to read ("prereaders"). They will be dependent on you for verbal instruction. Have them communicate verbally or with pictures with you, since writing skills will be limited. Read things out loud to them; read instructions and consider pre-building any presentation materials or build them with the students' help.

Students at the K-2 level are always in motion! Their attention span is about 10-15 minutes. So forget long lectures. Change your activity. Speak, then show a video, have the kids get up and do an activity. Sitting still can be difficult for them. Although they will need help, young students work well as a group. Be prepared for noise and laughter! Praise and encourage them.

At this age it is important to understand that intellectually students will not be able to make logical conclusions built on multiple steps. Perceptually they also do not understand the concept of fractions - they do not comprehend that when you remove part of an object, you no longer have the entire object.

Kids at this age believe what they see. Concepts are difficult to understand.

3rd - 5th Grade:

Students in upper elementary grades have a longer attention span: 20-30 minutes. They can add, subtract, multiple, divide, sort and combine into groups. They can follow written instructions and formulate questions, hypotheses, and have started to use problem solving techniques. They understand concepts and do not have to "see to believe".

6th - 8th Grade:

At this grade level, students have the intellect and skills to conduct basic experimentation. They can hypothesize, conceptualize, evaluate and draw logical conclusions. They are able to work through a 40 minute session.

9th - 12th Grade:

At this grade level, students have the intellect, knowledge and dexterity skills to experiment. They can hypothesize, conceptualize, evaluate and draw logical conclusions. They are able to work through an hour session.
