Elizabeth Patricia Butler, Ph.D

is a certified Six Sigma Black Belt from DuPont Field Engineering. Dr. Butler is currently Section Supervisor, Field Engineering Program As part of many responsibilities, she leads the early career development program, as well business relations with functions in Bio Based Materials, DuPont Electronics, DuPont Displays, Performance & Industrial Polymers and Engineering Polymers to identify roles and place Engineers in these businesses. Dr. Butler earned a Ph.D. in Materials Science and Engineering, from Lehigh University. She holds an M.S. in Materials Science and Engineering from Lehigh University and a B.Sc. from the University of Manchester, Manchester, England.
Robin R. Ollis
is an External Affairs Specialist for E.I. DuPont de Nenours & Co. Her current responsibility includes developing, enhancing and maintaining relationships with entities external to the plant site including media, community service groups, environmental and historical preservation activists, business leaders, industrial neighbors, community residents. She is also the site lead for high-profile company litigation. Ms. Ollis holds a BS in Forestry Wood Industries Management from West Virginia University and an MS in Environmental Science from WV Graduate College.

Rebecca “Becky” Schmieding is an IBM Certified Executive Project Manager as well as PMI certified Project Management Professional with responsibilities for IBM software and hardware delivery. She started with IBM in 1978 as an operating systems programmer. Throughout her career she has held a variety of jobs ranging from management, to providing technical and marketing support for IBM Asia Pacific Marketing, and to coordinating early product delivery programs in Europe. Ms. Schmieding recently received her Masters of Business Administration, as well as Masters of Project Management. She is also is a published technical author and an award-winning speaker.
Dr. Susan Benysh
received her PhD from Purdue University in 1998 from the Industrial Engineering Department with an emphasis in Human Factors Engineering. She started working for IBM in 1997, starting the iSeries User-Centered Design Team. Currently, she is the iSeries Team Lead for Hardware Usability and the Product Development team lead for the Serviceability Assessment Tool.

Linette also has seven years experience in consulting and telecommunications and currently serves as Treasurer on the SWE Board of Directors. She holds a BS in Mechanical Engineering from Oklahoma State University and is a licensed Engineering Intern. In her free time, Linette enjoys reading, volunteering at her church, and spending time with her husband and daughter.
Michelle Schneider
is a quality engineer for Dell Texas operations. Since joining Dell in 2003, she has held positions in quality as an engineer and manager. Michelle has close to 10 years experience in the electronics industry. Outside of work, she serves on the Girlstart Board of Directors and participates on the ASQ black belt certification exam review board. Michelle has a BS in Chemical Engineering from Northeastern University.
Melissa Tata
is a senior manager for Process Engineering for desktops. She has prior experience in Inventory Control Management, Sustaining Engineering Management, Product Engineering, and Black Belt Six Sigma Program Management during her seven year tenure at Dell Inc in the Americas Operations area. Melissa serves as SWE Speaker of the Council of Representatives and is also an officer in the local alumni groups for Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. She received her MS from the former and BS from the later both in Mechanical Engineering.

Using the Six Sigma Methodology

Using the six-sigma methodology, a cross functional team conducted research, surveys, and analyses to determine that the immediate manager holds the key to employee retention. The six-sigma assessment suggested that a tool should be developed to guide managers through an employees’ most important issues- job stability, sense of achievement, total compensation, relationship with manager and quality of life. The established tool is PACT- Plan, Ask, Coach and Thank. These are the essential elements that management must understand and embrace to create and sustain a successful organization. The presentation highlights the PACT genesis, elements, results to date and anticipated outcomes.

Jeff Brody is Director, Talent Management for Northrop Grumman Corporation’s Mission Systems Sector. Previously, Jeff was the Human Resources Director for Northrop Grumman Mission System’s Defense Mission Systems division. Jeff joined NG in 1988 and rejoined the company after stints with two high technology, venture capital backed start-up companies. He has an MA in Human Resources Management & Organizational Development from the University of Maryland and a BS in Industrial Relations from the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill. Jeff has completed executive education coursework at Harvard, the University of Pennsylvania Wharton Business School, UCLA and the University of Michigan. Jeff has achieved lifetime certification as a senior level human resources professional (SPHR) from the Society of Human Resources Management and is recognized as a Certified Compensation Professional by the American Compensation Association. He is the President of the University of Maryland, Alumni Association where was recognized as the Outstanding Alumnus for 2003. Jeff has served on Price Waterhouse Cooper’s HR Advisory Panel since 2003.
Sandy Fimiano
is the Human Resources Effectiveness Manager for Northrop Grumman Mission Systems’ Defense Mission Systems Division. She has over 25 years of experience with Northrop Grumman and its legacy organizations, including Litton, Emhart, Black and Decker, and Planning Research Corporation (PRC). Her background includes employee relations, workforce planning, recruitment, retention, compensation, performance management, training, and International HR. She has an MBA, with a concentration in Management and Organizational Development and a BS in Business Management from Bloomsburg University. Sandy was the lead Green Belt for the development of PACT, the Manager's Retention Toolkit and recently led another Six Sigma Rapid Improvement Event focusing on Net Hires.

Engineering Statistics

Activities include: plotting data on normal probability paper, interpreting contingency table data with chi-square statistics, comparing means with the t-test, comparing variances with the F distribution. is an Associate Professor of Civil Engineering at the University of Missouri-Kansas City, and is a Fellow of SWE and ASCE. She teaches undergraduate Engineering Statistics at UMKC.

Leaning into Aviation

The Boeing Company has captured the imagination and creativity of thousands of employees on the factory floor, who have seen their efforts lead to a safer, more efficient and profitable future. By stepping out of their regular routine and taking ownership of the product and processes, Boeing employees have mounted a grass-roots revolt against waste. Boeing has created a company culture committed to lean implementation and continuous process improvement.

Learn the basics of Lean Manufacturing and how continuous process improvement is applied in aviation manufacturing today. Attendees participate in a hands-on simulation of the build process of the Boeing 777. The participants will build a Lego airplane, and then incrementally improve the process using lean principles introduced during the seminar. Participants will work in teams, in a healthy competition to best each other. The basic lean principles are applicable to the office, production, maintenance, and any place where ‘waste’ of time and resources exists. The principles can even be applied at home.

Madonna Buhr has been with Boeing/McDonnell Douglas since 1978, a year after graduating from Lindenwood College with a BFA in Art. She is a Lean Consultant with a passion for implementing continuous process improvement. She has held various positions within the company including her current job as F/A-18 Lean focal. She has participated in a Shingijutsu Gemba Kaizen Seminar in Japan and is certified in AIW, 3P, TPM, and Six Sigma/ Navigator.
Susan Miller
graduated from the University of Missouri-Rolla with a BS in Mechanical Engineering in 1987 and a MS in Engineering Management in 1992 and became a licensed Professional Engineer in 1993 for the state of Missouri. Back when Boeing machined parts in St. Louis, Susan was a project engineer for machine installations. She transitioned into the Industrial Engineering organization in 2000 and began her Lean journey where she reached its pinnacle by joining the IDS Lean Enterprise Organization late last summer.
Nancy Samson
graduated from the University of Missouri-Columbia with a BS in Mechanical Engineering in December of 1985. Nancy started working at McDonnell Douglas Missile Systems as a Tool Engineer. Nancy is a Six Sigma Black Belt and is currently assigned to a multi-disciplined integration team as the Program Management Best Practices/Six Sigma focal. The position entails applying Six Sigma, Lean, facilitation and project management skills to identify and execute process improvements throughout the Tactical Aircraft organization.
