"Looking at the Stats"
Nationally, we continue to outpace 2003 stats. Total professional membership
is at 6225 compared to last year's 5535. Last year's renewal percentage, at
80.08%, is comparable with this year's 79.89%. The Region I renewal percentage
is 81.18% which is slightly higher than the national average. Region growth
rate is 8.84% which is lower than the national average of 10.2%.
National student membership is running slightly behind this time last year.
Currently there are 9766 student members compared to 10,223 last year. Both
student renewal and growth rates are lagging. Regionally we are seeing the
same trend as there are 268 student members which is 66 members less than
last year.
Total National membership is at 15,991 as of 1/31/2004, compared with 15,758
at 1/31/2003. That stats are up, however, room for improvement in the area
of new membership is indicated.

Note
to Presidents: "Change
in membership" reports will no longer be provided by HQ in hard copy
format. Sections have been directed to update section membership databases
by using the online member directory. Section Presidents and MAL representatives
have the leadership access to download data files from the directory. The
downloadable membership file is in ASCII delimited format and can be imported
into many common desktop software programs including Microsoft Excel, Access,
Word and Outlook, as well as contact management programs such as Palm Desktop,

Guidebook - The guidebook is to supply students, members, and potential
members with important information regarding the Society of Women Engineers
(SWE), its mission, objectives and history. In addition, information is provided
regarding available services, location of sections, and a list of corporate
members.
Membership
Manual - The manual is intended to assist Membership Chairs/Committees
and Sections in building, running and/or expanding Sections' membership programs.
It provides an overview of what a Section Membership Chair needs to know to
perform the job effectively, plus ideas for Sections on membership recruiting,
retaining, and increasing member participation.
