Tour Guide : Jimy Ngadimin will be our tour guide. Jimy graduated from Purdue University with a degree in Chemical Engineering. She is currently working as the quality control supervisor.
Meeting Description: In 1892, H. J. Heinz, founder of the H. J. Heinz Co., headquartered in Pittsburgh, PA, traveled across the United States to look for the best location to build his first branch manufacturing plant. Muscatine’s central location and its surrounding acres of fertile soil drew Mr. Heinz to the city. It was a prosperous city of 16k and had gained international notoriety from the manufacture of pearl buttons. The first products processed in Muscatine in the summer of 1893 were sauerkraut, pickles, and onions, with 25 employees. But by two years later, tomato processing for ketchup had been added, requiring a workforce of up to 200 during peak season. Today, the Muscatine factory makes a variety of products including: Gravy, pouch ketchup, restaurant bottled ketchup, Mustard, Lea & Perrins Worcestershire sauce, Heinz 57 Sauce, and various private label steak sauce.
Currently the plant is undergoing a construction project to replace old gravy retorting equipment. The project is estimated to cost $15 million and installation is expected in by the spring of 2010.
The meeting agenda will include a brief slide presentation about the Heinz facility followed by a 30 minute tour around the plant and Q&A. Please dress appropriately for a plant tour (no high heels or open-toed/open-heeled shoes, no jewelry other than a plain wedding band).
