SWE, Detroit Section, About Us
     
Founded in 1952, Detroit is one of the oldest Sections of the Society of Women Engineers. SWE Detroit is also one of the largest Sections in the country with over 300 members. SWE Detroit has six members elected to Fellow Grade, the highest grade of membership in the Society. Three past Achievement Award Winners are members of the Detroit Section. The Achievement Award is the highest honor bestowed by SWE. These winners are Roberta Nichols (retired from Ford Motor Company), Lynn Conway of the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor and Shirley Schwartz from General Motors. SWE Detroit’s Sue Cischke won SWE’s Upward Mobility Award when she was with Chrysler Corporation. SWE Detroit is home to many recipients of SWE’s Distinguished New Engineer Award. SWE Detroit historical information is kept at the Walter P. Reuther Library Archives at Wayne State University in Detroit, the largest archives of labor history in the country.
