Engineering Exploration Opportunities
|
What is Engineering? Engineering is defined as "the application of scientific and mathematical principles to practical ends such as the design, manufacture, and operation of efficient and economical structures, machines, processes, and systems." An engineer is a designer. She needs to be able to create something new if there is nothing that will perform the desired task. Engineers solve society's physical problems. If there is a problem that requires a solution that can be built, programmed, or created, an engineer can solve that problem. For example, when designing the space shuttle, engineers had to invent many new components to perform specific tasks, because there were no existing devices that would suffice. Here is a page from the National Science Foundation that details many of the fields where an engineer can work. In my search to find out more about engineering, it is the best I've found. Click to explore. I also have a page on this site with tips for preparing in high school to pursue an engineering degree in college. Click Also, click here to browse through a list of summer programs that can give you hands on engineering experience.
