"Engineering Road Show" for Outreach to High and Junior High Schools

"Engineering Road Show" for Outreach to High and Junior High Schools
Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo Student Section

The Society of Women Engineers, Cal Poly, SLO student chapter is requested funds to produce an "Engineering Road Show" and Brochure. The "Road Show" consists of a well-orchestrated set of skits or short sketches of various engineering disciplines. The brochure will be used to compliment the "Road Show" and to provide information to schools who can't have the road show. This "Road Show" will introduce engineering in a fun way: engaging and entertaining. This type of program is necessary because pre-college students have a general lack of knowledge as to what an engineer is and particularly the difference in the types of engineering. For women, who are more thoughtful in decision making, this lack of knowledge is a major deterrent in their choice of engineering as a career. This program aims to develop a professional quality play that is transferable. The students involved in this activity will travel to high schools and junior highs througlhout California performing their entertaining show. Our aim is to increase enrollment of women in engineering schools. This will be one small step meant to join with other programs offering encouragement for engineering as a career choice.

The skits have been developed and can be read at http://www.calpoly.edu/~jecollin
