SWE Archives at the Walter P. Reuther Library

In 1993, SWE designated the Walter P. Reuther Library and Archives of Labor and Urban Affairs the "official repository"
of the National SWE Archives. Located on the campus of Wayne State University, the Reuther Library is an impressive
building that holds over 1,500 archival collections, including the National SWE Archives. SWE Collections Archivist
Lauren Kata will provide a guided tour of the facilities, a sampling of SWE collections,
and a special SWE historical exhibit.
In addition to a "behind the scenes" tour of the Reuther Library, participants will have the opportunity to view the exhibit "Petticoats and Slide Rules:" SWE, A History of Women Engineers. Sponsored by generous funding from the Ford Motor Company Fund, the exhibit provides a dynamic overview of women engineers' evolving roles over almost 100 years-told through the story of SWE. Photographs, artifacts, newspaper clippings and timelines offer a multimedia experience.
Visitors will also have the chance to "make history" by participating in an optional recording session. This special exhibit component, "SWE Memoirs," invites SWE members to share a brief, 5-minute memory or experience. The videos will be archived and permanently stored as part of the collection at the Reuther Library.

Come see the rigorous testing DaimlerChrysler demands of their vehicles to ensure
customer safety and satisfaction. Your adventure begins with a brief orientation on the
history of the grounds and a description of the test tracks. Then the tour shifts into
high gear with a lap around "The Oval" - where at 110mph, no hands are needed on the steering
wheel due to the banked curve; a jaunt across the "Soup Bowl" where four wheel drive capabilities
are tested; and a slide down a 32% grade hill. Lunch is included on this tour.

Detroit Water Works Treatment Plant

Visit an engineering marvel - a water treatment plant constructed INSIDE one of the existing plant's water storage
reservoirs! Hazen and Sawyer, an environmental consulting and engineering firm in Detroit,
will lead you through the construction of the new Water Works Park II Water Treatment plant.
The plant is equipped with state of the art technologies, including inclined plate settlers,
Ozone disinfection, and deep bed filtration. The "old" plant, built in the early 1900s, is
still in service, and the two plants are a great example of the progress in civil and environmental engineering.
Cadillac Assembly Plant (Age: 12+)

Cadillac vehicles, such as the De Ville and Seville,
are born and bred at GM's Detroit Hamtramck assembly plant.
The plant was built in 1985 and employs over 4,000 workers. On this tour, you will see a portion of the plant's
3.5 MILLION sq.ft. via a comfortable tram! Come learn how one plant manages the production of 3 different vehicle
lines and how they blend old and new technologies in their quest for optimal effficiency.

The Drivability Test Facility provides simulated environmental test conditions for automobiles.
It is capable of simulations of temperature, velocity, road load, humidity, sun load, on full vehicles.
Jacobs Sverdrup provides a testing service to multiple clients in the automotive industry.
The tour will provide visitors with the opportunity to see the various types of test cells provided in the drivability
test facility.

Visit the National Historic Landmark of Henry Ford Estate and see why it has been featured in various magazines and
television specials such as HGTV's Christmas Castles. The Estate is the former home of automaker Henry Ford, founder of
Ford Motor Company, and his wife, Clara. The Fords lived at the Estate from 1915 until their deaths in 1947 and 1950.
The Estate is surrounded by acres of woods lush with birds and wildlife that Mr. Ford cherished. At the Estate, you will
tour the House, Tunnel and Power House. After the Estate tour, you will visit the Henry Ford Museum which showcases life
