Instructions for Paper Preparation and Submission
All presenters whose abstracts are accepted after peer review for presentation at the conference are encouraged (but not required) to publish their full papers in the conference proceedings. The proceedings will be produced on a CD-ROM, so it is important that the following guidelines be followed. Authors of published papers are expected to register for the conference, pay the registration fee, and present their paper. They will not be compensated for travel, hotel, registration fee, honorarium, or any other expenses.
PAPER FORMATTING GUIDELINES
The following paper formatting guidelines should be used for final paper submissions.
Sample Paper Format
The following PDF file contains a sample of the paper format: sample_paper.pdf
Paper Size and Length
The paper must be formatted for 8-1/2 inch by 11 inch U.S. standard paper format. The recommended length is between four (4) and six (6) pages. These limits are guidelines, and if necessary, you may submit a longer or shorter paper.
Page Layout
All papers must adhere to the following layout:
8-1/2 inch width x 11 inch length paper
1 column
Top and bottom margins: 1.0 inch
Left and right margins: 0.75 inch
Indents - first paragraph of section - none
Indents - all other paragraphs - 0.5 inch
NO page numbering
Paper Title and Author Data
The following information should be placed at the top of the first page of the paper.
Paper title: 14 point Times or Times New Roman bold, centered.
Author listing: 12 point Times or Times New Roman, italic, centered with author names; title, department or college; university, company, or organization; city, state and zip code.
Abstract
All papers must include an abstract.
Abstract text: 12 point Times italic or Times New Roman italic, full justified.
Begin the Abstract with the word Abstract - in Times italic or Times New Roman italic Bold text.
Do not indent the first paragraph.
Text
Regular text: 12 point Times or Times New Roman, full justified, single spacing, no space between the paragraphs.
Figure captions: 12 point Times or Times New Roman italic, centered; place below the figure, leave one blank line above and below.

Page Numbers
Do not include page numbers.
References
Use box numbers with square brackets [ ] within text.
Do not use superscripts or subscripts.
Place references in separate section in the order cited: Author's last name, First initial, "Title," Journal or book (italics), Vol., No., date, pp.
Author Biographical Information
You may supply a brief (no more than 100 words) background on each author if you wish to provide readers with more than the authors' affiliation. This information may be placed after the References.
File Name and Format
Please prepare your paper using Microsoft Word (preferred) or WordPerfect. If you need to use a different piece of software, please let us know as soon as possible, and we will let you know if we can accommodate your request. If your abstract is accepted, it will be assigned a paper number, which you will receive at the time you are notified of the acceptance of your abstract (by May 1, 2002). When you save your final paper, please name it using the paper number that was assigned. For example, paper #128 should have the file name 0128.doc (Word) or 0128.wpd (WordPerfect)
FINAL PAPER SUBMISSION INSTRUCTIONS (Electronic Submission)
Final papers must be submitted electronically only! No hard copies will be accepted. Papers will only be accepted if they are formatted in accordance with the "Paper Formatting Guidelines" above. Final paper submissions will only be accepted from authors whose abstract has been accepted. Note: The final paper submission deadline is Monday, July 1, 2002.
The proceedings will be published in electronic form on a CD-ROM. We will accept and process any files created by Microsoft Word (preferred) and WordPerfect. If you need to use a different piece of software, please let us know as soon as possible, and we will let you know if we can accommodate your request. Please use only fully released software versions - no beta copies.
Submission Process
You must submit your paper electronically in one of the following two ways:
Email Your File(s) (preferred)
We will accept files sent as attachments to your email message. Please send your message and files to
Sandra Yost, 2002 SWE National Conference Technical Paper Chair
swe_papers@swe.org
Make sure that you have saved the file using the name specified in the Paper Formatting Guidelines.
Send Disks through Regular Mail
This is the least preferred method of file submission. Remember that when you use this method, you are at the mercy of postal services. But, if you use this method, please submit your files on either a CD, or high-density 3.5-inch disk(s), PC version.
Note: If your file is too large to submit as an attachment, but you do not have time or want to make a CD and mail it, please let us know, and we can arrange for you to use anonymous FTP to transfer the file.
You will be notified by July 22, 2002 that your paper was received in an acceptable form.

The Art of Engineering
Engineers merge aesthetics with technology, style with performance, and comfort with quality to provide a variety of products to satisfy the most discriminating taste. Our theme, The Art of Engineering, speaks to the fact that engineering is not a technological study alone, but rather a combination of art and science. The 2002 SWE National Conference will be a cultural experience as well as a technical one. We invite you to experience the Renaissance… and participate in it by submitting a paper addressing any of the following topics.

Guidelines for Authors and Instructions for Abstract/Paper Submission
Abstracts to be considered for the technical paper tracks and the Open Technical Exchange must be
submitted following these instructions.
Instructions for submitting the full papers will be available at a later date.
Please check this page for any updates. It is recommended that authors check for updates
two weeks before submission deadlines. Submitting a full paper for publication in the
conference proceedings is encouraged, but optional. See the Call for Papers
for information about the topical areas that will be emphasized at this conference.
Authors may present their papers in an oral session or during the open technical exchange (OTE)
in poster format. Demonstrations complementing the paper topic are strongly encouraged at the OTE.
Undergraduate and graduate students are encouraged
to submit papers.
Important Dates:
Abstract submission deadline: March 15, 2002
Notification of acceptance: May 1, 2002
Final paper submission: July 1, 2002
Confirmation to authors of final paper receipt: July 22, 2002
Abstract Submission Instructions:
All abstracts must be submitted electronically by Friday, March 15, 2002.
The preferred method is by e-mail attachment to swe_papers@swe.org.
The abstract should be no more than one page in length and should be saved as a
Word document or in Rich Text Format. The file should be named using your last name
and first initial; for example, doej1.doc for the first abstract you submit, doej2.doc
for the second, and so on. Including the text of the abstract in the body of an e-mail
message to swe_papers@swe.org is an alternative method for submitting abstracts.
The third and least preferred method of abstract submission is to mail a floppy disk to the
Technical Paper and Presentation Chair at the mailing address given below.
In addition to the abstract itself, authors should provide contact information (e-mail, phone, mailing address) and the preferred presentation format (oral presentation and/or poster at the Open Technical Exchange). Oral presentations are strongly encouraged.
Paper Acceptance and Notification:
Abstracts will be peer reviewed, and authors will be notified of paper acceptance by May 1, 2002. All authors whose papers are accepted will be invited, but not required, to submit a full paper for publication in the conference proceedings. The guidelines for final paper formatting and submission will be posted at a later date.
