Mackinac Island:
(~4.5 hours north of Detroit)

The natural beauty of victorian Mackinac Island awaits you. Limited to transportation of horse and buggy, bicycle or foot., surrounded by water, it has escaped the vast changes of time. For more information visit www.mackinac.com

Frankenmuth:
(~2.0 hours north of Detroit)

Michigan's "Little Bavaria" delights visitors from all over the US. This Bavarian village offers shopping, world famous chicken dinners, beautiful sightseeing and lodging. For more information, visit www.frankenmuth.org.

Marshall:
(~2 hours west of Detroit)

Named as a National Historic Landmark District, Marshall boasts more than 800 historic buildings to explore. The Honolulu House Museum is home to the Marshall Historic Society and is open to visitors. Michigan Amish Country:
(various locations ~2 to 3 hours from Detroit)

Michigan Amish Country is home to a horse-and-buggy way of life with customs dating back 300 years. The Amish grow or fashion what they need and often sell their finely crafted work. Amish-owned stores are closed on Sundays and most do not have telephones. The towns of Clare and Mio feature more than a dozen Amish businesses where you can find delicious pies, beautiful woodworking and even buggy making shops. Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore:
(~4.5 hours northwest of Detroit)

Mountains of sand tower as high as 460 feet above Lake Michigan. Dunes and Beaches cover much of this park's 37 miles along Lake Michigan. The visitor center is located near Empire, MI, a stop at the center is recommended for maps, camping information, etc. For a breathtaking overview of the Dunes habitat and ecosystem, start with the Pierce-Stocking Drive (information available at visitor center). Michigan Space and Science Center:
(~1.5 hours west of Detroit in Jackson, MI)

The Space and Science Center honors Jackson native astronaut, Commander James McDivitt, of the Apollo 9 crew. The Center features a geodesic dome where visitors can peer through a microscope at a 4-billion-year-old moon rock. Close to the Center, you can see the Cascades - a series of 16 waterfalls built by an auto-parts magnate to thank the city for the fortune he made in Jackson. Cabela's Superstore:
(~1 hour southwest of Detroit in Dundee, MI)

Outdoor enthusiasts flock to Cabela's where buying outdoor gear is an adventure. The store features a walk-through aquarium, wildlife displays, an art gallery and a restaurant that serves game dishes. Visit www.monroeinfo.com or 800-252-3011 for more information.

Great Lakes Lighthouse Festival:
(~3 hours north of Detroit in Alpena, MI)

October is the time of the Great Lakes Lighthouse Festival in the northern lower peninsula of Michigan. Visitors can tour lighthouses along Lake Huron, as well as keeper's quarters. Upper Peninsula Sites:
(~4 to 10 hours north of Detroit in the UP)

Michigan's Upper Peninsula features many natural sites to view and explore. Visitors can see mammoth waterfalls at Tahquamenon Falls State Park near Sault Ste. Marie or journey to Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore along Lake Superior. On the UP's west side, you can view spectacular fall scenery at Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park.
