This tour will introduce the visitors to several labs that are performing research into the use of light to process informa- tion. Research includes the use of arrays of micron-size lasers that can replace the bulky wires inside computers, the use of unique optics that can extend the depth of field of microscopes by a factor of 10 or more, the use of advanced multimedia modules for enhancing engineering education, the microfabrication of electronic and optoelectronic devices, and a display system technique that optimizes the human interface to maximize the transfer of information.
National Ice Core Laboratory and U.S. Geological Survey Core Laboratory

One of only four ice core facilities in the world, the lab is housed in this 53,000 cubic foot freezer. You'll need your warm jacket (no sandals) for this tour. The lab stores miles of ice cores, some up to 460,000 years old. The ice cores from as far away as Antarctica are considered a pristine record of environmental history. The tour also includes the Geologic Core Laboratory with rock cores from around the world. The rock cores give a record of climate changes in mud, sand, and other materials that have changed through time. Fossils found in the rock cores give clues to our geologic history.
