INTRODUCTION
The Society of Women Engineers (SWE) would like to invite middle and high school students, who are interested in science and math, to participate in the Explore Engineering event, sponsored by Raytheon Company. This event is being held in conjunction with the SWE National Conference, June 26 - 30, 2001. Approximately 3000 women engineers and students from all over the country, along with representatives and industry leaders in high-tech, energy, construction, manufacturing, computers and other engineering disciplines will be present at the 2001 SWE Conference. This interaction will give the students an excellent opportunity to learn and practice networking skills and obtain information on real life applications of engineering, as well as the courses required to pursue an engineering career.
There will be three components to the this event: Engineering Discipline Discussions, Interactive Technology Demonstrations, and "Leaps and Bounds". The Engineering Discipline Discussions will include presentations of the different fields and disciplines of engineering. This section will include many of the following areas: software, systems, hardware, electrical, mechanical, etc. The Interactive Technology Demonstrations section is intended to focus on hands-on displays and demonstrations of current and developing technological products and areas. The "Leaps and Bounds" section will showcase "leaps and bounds" that have occurred in engineering during the last twenty-five years. These stations will focus on jumps in technology, strides made by women engineers, and hurdles overcome through inventions. Using the "leaps and bounds" theme, participants will have an opportunity to interact with professional engineers and look twenty-five years into their future imagining how engineering innovation can be part of their lives. In addition, the event will contain an inventor's workshop to allow participants to get information on how innovative ideas can be turned into reality. During this time students can see the exciting opportunities available from a career in engineering, and identify some tangible steps they can take to become an engineer.
Participants are invited to attend the Ice Cream Social at the end of this full and exciting day of learning about and experiencing engineering.
OBJECTIVES
- To excite middle and high school students about career options in science and math, and to demonstrate that engineering is fun.
- To demonstrate to the students, their parents, teachers and counselors the fact that women engineers are successful in their field. The students, along with their parents and teachers/counselors, will get the opportunity to mingle with engineering students and professionals.
- To introduce the students to the industry representatives at the Career Fair, and to give the students an opportunity to explore the options of an engineering career.
PROGRAM
Date: Wednesday, June 27, 2001
Place: Colorado Convention Center
Time: 1:00 p.m. to 8:15 p.m., Ice Cream Social (optional) 8:30 to 10:00 p.m.
Cost: $5 per student, $10 per parent or teacher; includes boxed dinner
- Once the middle and high school students have registered, they will attend the primary Explore Engineering presentations.
- Next they will be admitted to the Career Fair exhibits, accompanied by guides and mentors.
- After visiting the exhibitor booths and collecting information on engineering career opportunities, the participants will move on to an Inventor's Workshop, and then complete their day at the Ice Cream Social.
- Boxed dinners will be provided and the program will be followed by an Ice Cream Social .
REGISTRATION INFORMATION
Registration must be received by Friday, June 15, 2001. Due to space constraints, a total of 225 student registrants will be accepted based on a first-come, first-served basis. Both male and female students are encouraged to participate. Each student may be accompanied by one or both parents.
