    Karletta Chief

Karletta Chief is Miss Navajo Nation 2000 - 2001. She is from Black Mesa, Arizona, and grew up in a home with no electricity, no running water, and little money. With Navajo as her first language, she went on to obtain an undergraduate degree in civil and environmental engineering from Stanford University. Ms. Chief then acquired her Master's degree in civil and environmental engineering. After 6 years of college, she took a break to serve her people as Miss Navajo Nation. She will return to Stanford to pursue her Ph.D. in the Environmental and Science Program upon completion of her term.

For many years, her family experienced the environmental degradation by local mining. She has seen the land being torn for the sake of energy needs of metropolitan areas. This background created her passion to study environmental engineering and in preserving and healing the environment. She wants to use her education to not only help her family, but to contribute back to her people. Ultimately, she would like to receive her Ph.D. With this degree she would like to be a university professor and provide environmental consulting to her people (as well as native people in general), and fight to protect lands and natural resources.

As Miss Navajo Nation, she has aspirations to update the technology of the office, particularly through creating a web site. This web site will serve as an education and communication tool to the Navajo Nation at home and abroad.
