ON THE EDGE OF TECHNOLOGY, LEADERSHIP AND DIVERSITY……

ur tours will expose you to the many faces of Arizona. Tour high-tech facilities such as Intel, Boeing and Palo Verde Nuclear Power Plant. Visit fun tech places such as Frank Lloyd Wright’s desert home, KPNX television station and Arizona Diamondbacks’ baseball stadium. Relax and enjoy no tech activities such as the Desert Botanical Gardens and a horseback breakfast ride. Unless noted otherwise, all tours will be conducted in air-conditioned facilities. Should a tour be cancelled, pre-paid fees will be refunded or exchanged for another tour. Tour fees include transportation and entrance fees (if applicable). Buses will depart from the Hyatt Regency Hotel. Tour times shown represent bus departure and return times. All tours are to be considered handicapped accessible, unless otherwise noted; however, the buses may not be handicapped accessible. Please wear comfortable walking shoes and clothing for all tours.

TUESDAY TOURS

HORSEBACK BREAKFAST RIDE

Enjoy a two-hour horseback ride through the beautiful Arizona desert and mountains. Stop for an hour and eat a leisurely breakfast on the trail. Wear long pants, close-toed shoesand a hat.

SEDONA/OAK CREEK CANYON

Time: 7:00am – 5:00pm

Much photographed Oak Creek Canyon and the picture-
postcard town of Sedona are two of Arizona’s most scenic spots – second only to the Grand Canyon. Drive the most dramatic approach to the canyon through sagebrush country brightened with sycamore-lined washes, where the earth itself begins to change color, from white to orange to red. The
preserved cliff dwellings of Montezuma’s Castle are your first stop and a chance to stretch your legs. The dramatic limestone cliffs tell the story of the Sinagua civilization that vanished
800 years ago. Enjoy a buffet lunch before you explore the shops and studios of Sedona’s artists and craftsmen. Shop at Tlaquepaque (say "tah-lock-ah-pock-ee") or venture into the newest shopping realm of Hozho surrounded by the unique architecture of the Arizona Territory. A drive into Oak Creek Canyon offers a look at the majestic scenery that served as backdrop for the movies Apache, Broken Arrow and many others.

PALO VERDE NUCLEAR POWER PLANT

Time: 7:30am – 1:00pm

The Palo Verde Nuclear Generating Station is the largest electrical power producer of any kind in the United States. It produces enough energy to meet the total electricity needs of any one of our 13 smallest states. The three nuclear units that generate this huge supply of energy are clean-air power providers. Speak with women engineers at the site and take a site bus tour. Some portions of the tour may include walking outdoors. Photo ID required.

BIOSPHERE 2

Time: 8:00am – 3:30pm

Fee: $80.00

Travel time each way: 1-1/2 hours

Tour the facilities of Biosphere 2 in the beautiful desert outside of Tucson. Biosphere 2 is an unprecedented, international, ecological science experiment. Sealed within the 3.15-acre structure lie several miniature ecosystems: rain forest, savannah, desert, ocean, marsh and farm. Fee includes admission, guided tour and lunch. Some portions of the tour will include walking outdoors.

BOEING HELICOPTER

Time: 8:00am – 11:30am

Fee: $20.00

The Boeing Company is the world’s largest manufacturer of commercial jetliners, military aircraft and the nation’s largest NASA contractor. Join us on a tour of The Boeing Company’s state of the art manufacturing facility, where the Apache attack helicopter, one of the United States’ premier military fighting aircraft, is produced. Some portions of the tour may include walking outdoors. If you are not a United States citizen, please indicate that on the registration form so the appropriate paperwork can be forwarded to you.

TALIESIN WEST

This exclusive tour offers an intimate look at Frank Lloyd Wright’s desert home. Visitors have the opportunity to talk to a Wright associate, enjoy leisurely mid-afternoon refreshments in the colorful Taliesin Fellowship dining room and visit all the historic indoor and outdoor spaces, plus see the historic Sun Cottage. See how Wright’s architecture relates to the natural desert and hear an overview of Wright’s theories of design, history of the site and activities of the Taliesin community life. Some portions of the tour may include walking outdoors.

ARIZONA ROTORCRAFT

Time: 12:15pm – 5:00pm

Tour this woman-owned, multi-million dollar business based in Mesa, Arizona. ARI repairs and overhauls rotary-wing aircraft components for customers such as AlliedSignal and Boeing Helicopter Systems. About 60% of its work is on the Allison 250 Series gas turbine engine which is in approximately 70% of existing helicopters. ARI is one of only 11 companies worldwide authorized to work on these engines.

WEDNESDAY TOURS

DESERT BOTANICAL GARDENS

Time: 7:00am – 11:00am

The Desert Botanical Gardens offers more than just an understanding of the unique plants that inhabit the arid regions. Tour includes the gardens with over 20,000 desert plants, as well as exhibits and a working research facility on living in harmony with the desert. Tour will be outdoors.

BANK ONE BALL PARK and AMERICA WEST ARENA

Time: 8:30am – 11:30am

Fee: $15.00

Start with the Bank One Ball Park and take a behind the scenes look at the newest and only air-conditioned baseball stadium in the world. See the stadium’s unique retractable roof, the playing field, dugouts, underground batting tunnel, press box, luxury suites, Arizona Baseball Club, outfield swimming pool and the DiamondTown concourse exhibits.

Next, take a behind the scenes look at America West Arena, the proud home of the Phoenix Suns, Phoenix Mercury, Arizona Rattlers and Phoenix Coyotes. Go backstage and see the dressing rooms, event floor, luxury suites and the technology behind the fabulous shows. Both tours involve walking out doors.

KPNX CHANNEL 12

Time: 2:00pm – 5:00pm

Travel time each way: 2-block walking distance

Lights, camera, action! Tour the technical facility of one of Arizona’s most popular television stations. See and hear about uses of the studio, robotic cameras, audio/video equipment, commercial playback machine, master control office, satellite dishes and news department. See the technology behind the making of a news program and discuss the transition to digital television with the chief engineers at the station.

HEARD MUSEUM

Time: 2:00pm – 5:00pm

The internationally acclaimed Heard Museum is one of the best places to experience the myriad of cultures and art of the Native Americans of the Southwest. The Heard’s nine spacious exhibit galleries and beautiful outdoor bricked courtyards feature outstanding traditional and contemporary Native American art.

Visit the facilities of the world-renowned Mayo Clinic in Scottsdale. Since opening in June 1987, Mayo Clinic Scottsdale has provided medical care for more than 350,000 patients. The clinic offers health care and diagnosis in 62 fields of expertise. Ongoing clinical research trials assure that the patients have access to the newest and most effective medical treatments available.

INTEL CORPORATION

Enjoy a tour of FAB 12, Intel’s first high-volume manufacturing facility for 0.25 micron technology. Selected as one of eight pilot programs to participate in a national program, Project XL (Excellence and Leadership), this fab has received environmental awards in the areas of water treatment, architecture and landscaping. Learn about the $25 million dollar reverse osmosis water treatment facility, the first of its kind. Join us and see where the most state-of-the-art Intel Pentium(r) II processors are made.

ARIZONA STATE UNIVERSITY

Join ASU students for a tour of the campus and the College of Engineering and Applied Sciences. You will have the opportunity to tour three of the following engineering labs: Acoustic Anechoic Chamber, Computing Commons, Moon Devil (moon buggy) Lab, Earth Quake Lab, Solar Car Lab, Scanning Electron Microscopy Lab or the Ion Beam Lab. Highlights of the ASU campus may be arranged including Sun Devil Stadium, Grady Gammage Auditorium and Campus Arboretum walks. Some portions of the tour will include walking outdoors.
