Wednesday, 1:30pm - 3:30pm Free Workshop Workshop leader: Dr. Francine M. Deutsch Francine M. Deutsch, Professor of Psychology at Mount Holyoke College, will review findings from her recently published book, Halving it all: How Equally Shared Parenting Works (April, 1998, Harvard University Press). In a study sponsored by the National Science Foundation, Deutsch conducted in-depth interviews with 150 dual-earner couples, some of whom equally shared parenting. Obstacles to equality at home include gender discrimination in the workplace, deep-seated male and female identities, old-fashioned ideas about maternal instincts and the inequality in friends relationships. Deutsch will discuss how equal sharers resist the pressures that usually push families toward inequality and instead, create conditions friendly to truly equal families. The best way to have it all (fulfilling careers and family life for both men and women) is to halve it all, argues Deutsch. A book signing will be held at the end of the workshop.
