Multi-Cultural Awareness Session - The Invisible Minority: The Lesbian, Gay, and Bisexual Question
Mark Costella , Environmental, Safety & Health Operations Manager, Earth & Environmental Sciences Directorate, University of California, Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory
Wednesday, 10:00am-12:00noon

As employees of a DOE National Laboratory, we frequently interact with a variety of people in the performance of our daily duties. Many of our past experiences have taught us, even preconditioned us, to approach these encounters in a predetermined way.

Unfortunately, many of us are not equipped with the proper tools with which to evaluate these experiences. Therefore, our attempts might hamper, hinder, or even eliminate our interactions. Communication could be at risk, and as a government agency, and a global community, our communications and interactions are crucial to our success.

The principal objective of this presentation is to advance individual knowledge base with primary regard to lesbian, gay and bisexual (LGB) community awareness. This presentation, "The Invisible Minority: The Lesbian, Gay, and Bisexual Question" is intended to be a vehicle for communication-the primary caveat being that communication implies education and understanding.

This presentation might be considered a two-way conversation: It is meant to be interactive and non-threatening, a forum for communication and education in both directions. Facilitating acceptance is not a goal of this presentation.

The topics to be covered include:

  • recent history of the LGB movement
  • laws and policies establishing equitable rights
  • current actions taking place within DOE, including some of the subtle realities
  • "Next Steps"-a broad picture of the impact of our interactions on the goals and prosperity of the Laboratories, as well as our individual success.
  • (Note: this topic will be discussed in a group dialogue exercise that explores hidden questions surrounding LGB issues).

Mark Costella holds a BA degree in Cognitive Science from San Francisco State University and the University of California, Santa Cruz. As a seventeen year career employee at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, Mr. Costella has advanced through various classifications-from Environmental Research Coordinator, to Health and Safety Technician, to Industrial Hygiene Associate, to Training Specialist, and currently to Environmental, Safety, and Health Operations Manager for the Environmental Programs Directorate.

Mr. Costella continues to be active in diversity awareness at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, with the University of California and in the local community. Four years ago, feeling the need to reach out to his fellow workers and give back to the workplace and community, Mr. Costella developed the presentation "The Invisible Minority: The Lesbian, Gay, and Bisexual Question." Since that time, Mr. Costella has accepted numerous invitations to speak both within LLNL and for other organizations, including the 1997 Department of Energy EEO / Diversity Conference, Sandia National Laboratories - New Mexico, Sandia National Laboratories - Livermore, Society of Women Engineers (SWE) 1997 Conference, Las Positas College, Livermore School District, DOE Rocky Flats Field Office, 1997 DOE Oakland Operations Office Quad Council Conference. Future engagements include: 1998 DOE Oakland Operations Office Quad Council Conference, DOE Oakland Operations Office, 1998 Department of Energy EEO / Diversity Conference, Hewlett Packard,Oak Ridge National Laboratory.

Type and Teamwork: How Psychological Type Influences The Collaborative Climate
    Bonnie Hageman, Consulting Psychologist Press
    Jim Bianchetta, Bianchetta Resources
    Thursday, 1:00pm-2:30pm

High performance teams have a more diverse membership and build synergy from differences, instead of fighting about alternate world views. A common practical application of the Myers-Briggs® Type Indicator in team environments helps members discuss differences in style and aptitudes in a non-threatening manner. By learning to recognize and value individual strengths, team members can find their most productive niches and reduce interpersonal conflicts.

Bonnie Hageman is the regional representative for CPP, publisher of the Myers-Briggs® Type Indicator . Jim Bianchetta is the founder of Bianchetta Resources, a management consultant firm specializing in team processes and change management. Previously, Mr. Bianchetta held marketing, product, business and quality management positions at Union Carbide, and consulted for Wright Killen & Co.
