Convention Highlights

This year, the Society of Women Engineers Houston Area Section has the honor of hosting the 1998 National Convention and Student Conference of the Society of Women Engineers at the George R. Brown Convention Center, June 16-20. The Convention's theme is Diversity - Look How Far We've Come.

We are very excited about our keynote speakers and the diversity of our programs. Over 2,000 attendees - both male and female professionals and students - are expected at this year's Convention.

The Convention program consists of a wide range of activities, including

• Workshops
• Panel Discussions
• Technical Presentations
• Tours
• Special Events such as:
  • Exhibits & Career Fair
  with over 180 companies
  • Explore Engineering for local 6th-12th grade students, parents and teachers
  • Networking Night at Space Center Houston

• Dr. John Lienhard, father of National Public Radio's The Engines of Our Ingenuity and University of Houston professor
• Marjorie "Sandy" Thompson, first woman bomber pilot to fly in WWII
• Dr. Bonnie Dunbar, NASA astronaut
• Donna Shirley, manager of the Mars Exploration Program
• Rebecca Mark, vice chairman of Enron Corp. and chairman of Houston-based Enron International
• Dr. Karan Watson, assistant dean of engineering at Texas A&M University
• Dr. Richard Smalley, Nobel Prize winner and Rice University professor

Please join us in celebrating Diversity - Look How Far We've Come at our media reception. Light food and beverages will be served.

Media representatives are invited to mingle with society officers, dignitaries and convention speakers at the Convention's Opening Ceremony and Reception. This is an excellent opportunity to meet and interview some of the top women engineers in the country, including

• World War II Bomber Pilot Marjorie Thompson
• Astronaut Bonnie Dunbar
• Mars Exploration Project Manager Donna Shirley
• SWE 1997-98 President Gloria Montano
• SWE 1998-99 President Roberta Gleiter

In addition, starting at 6 pm, the convention will host Explore Engineering, a special event for local junior and senior high school students, parents and teachers, who want to learn more about engineering as a career option.
