SWE Prize Winners at the VT State Science & Math Fair

SWE North Country awarded prizes at the Vermont State Science & Mathematics Fair held on 3/31/07.  We are pleased to announce the SWE Engineering Prize Winners:

The top winner was Merideth Zeller from Rutland High School.  Her project determined whether an average household in Rutland could use a reasonable number of small-scale wind turbines to generate at least 10% of the household's electricity.  The SWE judges were impressed by her extensive and thorough research of wind speed data in the Rutland area, including eight weeks of collecting data from her back yard and contacting the airport to obtain average wind speed and direction for every month from 2002 through 2006.  She also learned about the small-scale wind turbines and even built a working prototype!

The honorable mentions were:

Allie DeRosia from Green Mountain Union High School, for her project on polar and electrical magnetism.

Sorcha Dundas from Rutland High School, for her project on recycled energy.

Megan Resnick from Rutland High School, for her project on the effect of temperature on the growth of crystals.

Amanda Rochon from Weathersfield Middle School, for her project on whether the Golden Gate Bridge or the Zakim Bridge can hold more weight.
