Hope to see you all at future events! Smith College Evening With Industry Submitted by: Sherisse Hughes The Smith College annual Evening with Industry was held on Thursday, April 14, at the House of Teriyaki, Japanese restaurant in Northampton, MA. Several SWE-Hartford officers were there: Sarah Johnson, President; Jonna Gerken, Secretary; and Sherisse Hughes, Professional Development Chair. We had dinner and networked with over 15 Smith College engineering students. Sherisses baby daughter, Elyse, was also there and had a chance to be cuddled by everyone. The brave ones had sushi and the rest of us had California rolls and teriyaki. It was great to see how the students have progressed from last year. About half the group were sophomores and juniors. They were curious about how we balance work and other aspects of our lives. They were also interested in advice for starting an engineering career. We discussed their plans for summer break. I learned about the Smith ABET accreditation process (its almost complete). We also talked about the Fundamentals of Engineering exam, which every Smith engineering student has to take. One of the seniors, Mimi Zhang, is going to engineering graduate school at Berkeley, and the other, Michelle Montepara, is starting at Sikorsky this summer. Michelle was honored with a speech as a driving force behind the Smith SWE chapter. Sarah, Jonna, and myself also had a chance to catch up since we dont often see each other. It was well worth the short 30-minute drive north. I would recommend taking advantage of this event when it comes around again next spring. 21st Annual Certificate of Merit Submitted by: Liz Garypie The 21st Annual SWE-Hartford Certificate of Merit Awards Ceremony was held at the University of Hartford on Tuesday, April 26th. Sixty-one (61) high school juniors representing approximately 33 high schools from the greater Hartford and Springfield areas were honored this year. The students were nominated by their teachers and guidance counselors as having completed three years of mathematics and sciences classes with excellence, and being active in their school and/or community. Many of the students and their parents were able to attend the ceremony this year and were treated to four wonderful speakers who talked about the rewards of careers in engineering. The speakers reflected on how they got into engineering, what a typical day is like, and what they enjoy about their jobs. Many of the students expressed great interest in pursuing an engineering or technical career and had lots of great questions! Special thanks to our speakers this year: Lynda Fredette, Jake Mendelssohn, Qing Huo, and Liz Garypie. Thank you to all the SWE-Hartford and University of Hartford SWE members who helped to make this years event a great success; especially Jonna Gerken, Sarah Johnson, Carol Coppa, Karen Swartz, Jen Levins, and Lauren Zaccaro. Pratt & Whitney Take Your Child to Work Day Submitted by: Jonna Gerken On Thursday, April 28th, SWE-Hartford once again participated in the annual Pratt & Whitney Take Your Child to Work Day (TYCTWD) event. This is the 4th time that SWE-Hartford has sponsored a booth at this event, and it was, as usual, a huge success. This years TYCTWD theme was From Fiction to Future and SWE-Hartford had a great experiment for the kids. We made Silly Putty"! with over 200 eager participants. Multi-colored gobs of putty sprung from mixing glue, detergent, and water. It was a very popular booth and the kids (as well as some of the parents) learned what a colloid* is. They also learned that it was invented here in Connecticut in 1943 in an attempt to make synthetic rubber. Many thanks to all the volunteers who helped during the day: Laura Newell, Aimee Santeler, Christina Stenman, Shelton Richards, Kim Sullivan, Kendra Stafford, Kerri Wojcik, John Riehl, and Sonya Snyder. They kept up with the crowds of kids and did a great job! *A colloid is something that is both a solid and a liquid at the same time, a suspension. For example, toothpaste, mayonnaise, and fog or smoke.
