SWE Government Relations and Public Policy SWE's Government Relations and Public
Policy committee engages in efforts to inform the federal government of
issues relevant to women engineers, to ensure that legislation and policy
initiatives help to create a supportive educational and work environment.

with your elected representatives to support SWE's work. About the Speaker Karen J. Horton, P.E., is an Associate Professor of Mechanical
Engineering Technology at the University of Maine, and a licensed professional
engineer in the state of Maine. She
holds degrees in Industrial Mathematics (M.S.), Mechanical Engineering
(B.S.), and Elementary Education (B.S.).
Horton has presented papers on topics related to diversity in
engineering education at annual Frontiers in Education and American Society
of Engineering Education conferences.
Prior to her 1997 appointment to the University she was employed as a
Mechanical Engineer by Bath Iron Works in Maine and the Naval Coastal Systems
Center in Florida, and as a high school math and electronics teacher by the
Department of Defense Dependent Schools in Germany. Horton is a Senior Member of the Society of
Women Engineers and has a lengthy record of service to the Society at the
local, regional, and national levels including as advisor to the University
of Maine Collegiate Section. She
serves on the Champions Board of the Maine Girls Collaborative Program. Since 2002 she has directed the annual
University of Maine Creative Design at CAD Camp, and she has administered
over $62,000 in camp scholarships for campers from underrepresented
groups. |
