Public Speaking Description: Are you nervous when you need to speak in front of a group? Do you find yourself saying “um” during every
sentence, while you try to collect your thoughts? You may be surprised to hear that excellent
speakers are not just “born that way” and that with practice techniques, tips
and coaching, you too can be a master presenter. As an engineer who can also present her
data and ideas clearly and persuasively, you will be extremely effective. About the Speakers Phyllis Doig works at EMC
Corporation in Hopkinton, MA, as a Principal Business Systems Analyst. With a Bachelor of Engineering degree from
Stevens Institute of Technology in New Jersey, Phyllis began her career as a
mechanical engineer on the F-14 aircraft program with Grumman Aerospace
Corporation in New York; she worked at Grumman for three years doing thermal
analyses of new avionics equipment and aircraft engines using finite element
modeling. After completing an MBA from
the University of Virginia, Phyllis moved into the world of corporate IT
systems and has been involved in database design as well as ERP and CRM
implementations at American Cyanamid, Oracle Corporation, and now at EMC
Corporation. With both functional and
technical knowledge of manufacturing, distribution, and financial systems,
Phyllis enjoys the “big picture view” of IT systems and making them work to
support business needs. During her time at Grumman in New York, Phyllis delivered a paper at
the national SWE convention in San Jose, Puerto Rico on “The Role of a
Mechanical Engineer in Aircraft Avionics System Integration”. She served as secretary in the New Jersey chapter while working at
American Cyanamid. Phyllis is
currently an active member of SWE Boston, regularly contributing to the
monthly newsletter with articles on our professional development meetings. Phyllis enjoys public speaking and served in the Wayne, New Jersey
Toastmasters club for several years as VP Education and Club President and
earned her first Competent Toastmaster (CTM) speech award. Since moving to Massachusetts in 1994,
Phyllis became a charter member of the EMC Toastmasters club in Westborough,
and earned her second CTM speech award as well as a Competent Leader
award. In addition to Toastmasters and
the Society of Women Engineers, Phyllis enjoys hosting international exchange
students through the Hubert Humphreys Fellowship program and is volunteering
with FIRST Robotics for the first time this year. Kerry Mahoney works at EMC
Corporation in Hopkinton, MA, as a Principal Technical Program Manager in
Hardware Engineering. Prior to that
she was a hardware design engineer at EMC.
Kerry earned a BS in Electrical Engineering from Northeastern
University in 2001. While at Northeastern, she co-oped for 9 months at LTX
Corporation in Westwood, MA; and, then worked for 2 years (part and full
time) at EMC before graduation. At Northeastern, Kerry was an active student in the College of
Engineering including vice president and member of SWE (Society of Women
Engineers), journalism leader for the FIRST robotics team, member of IEEE,
participant on the COE Student Advisory Committee, and student advisor for
the Connections program startup. Since graduating from Northeastern in 2001, Kerry has remained in the
Boston area, working at EMC and actively participating in SWE-Boston. She has been a SWE-Boston officer
(President, Vice President, Treasurer) and is currently a Section
Representative. In 2008, Kerry earned
an MS in Industrial Engineering from Northeastern. In her spare time, she enjoys cheering for
the Red Sox, Celtics, and Patriots! Megan McGuire is currently
a Mechanical Engineering senior at Northeastern University. She has been an
active member of SWE since her freshman year, holding positions as Secretary,
Vice President, and Historian. She also planned travel arrangements for over
20 students to travel to the SWE National conference both in Baltimore in 2008
and Long Beach in 2009. In addition she has been a member of American Society
of Mechanical Engineers (ASME), and the Northeastern Women’s Club Rugby team.
Megan has had three six month co-ops through Northeastern’s co-op
program. She worked at Raytheon as a System Safety Engineer, Boston
Scientific in the Endoscopy group as a Research and Design Engineer, and most
recently for the Naval Undersea Warfare Center in Newport, RI as a Mechanical
Engineer for the Torpedo Propulsion group. Megan enjoys reading, cooking, photography and painting in her spare
time. She will graduate this May and is currently interviewing for full time
jobs. |
