Session 2: Managing Managers:  Is It for You?

Description

Are you considering a role in upper management?  Do you want to learn more about the differences from first line management?  This session is geared toward women with 10-20 years of work experience considering a management role with larger responsibility.  A panel of managers will share their experiences and discuss how to assess and prepare for a these kind of roles.

 

Panelists:

 

Dr. Ellen Ferraro is currently the Deputy Director of the System Validation, Test and Analysis Directorate for Raytheon Integrated Defense Systems (IDS).  In this role, she helps lead an organization of over 1100 people responsible for all aspects of system integration and test including test facilities, test equipment development and test engineering.  Ellen received her PhD degree in Electrical and Computer Engineering from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst in 1994 under a NASA Graduate Student Research Fellowship.  Ellen is a member of the IEEE, and is currently chairing the IEEE 2010 Phased Array Conference.  She is an active member of the Boston Section of the Society of Women Engineers (SWE) and is the recipient of the Mass High Tech “Women to Watch in 2006” Award, the SWE 1999 Distinguished New Engineer Award and the SWE 2007 Emerging Leaders Award. 

 

Liz Garypie currently holds the position of Chief Engineer, NAVAL HAWK Programs at Sikorsky Aircraft.  In this role, Liz provides overall technical leadership for all NAVAL HAWK development and production programs, including engineering execution, production support, proposal generation and technology requirements and insertion.  Major programs include the MH-60R and MH-60S for the US Navy and International S-70B, and she currently oversees an organization of over 20 engineering managers and team leads.

 

Liz joined Sikorsky Aircraft in 1999 in the Transmission Engineering group, and has since held a number of positions within Engineering and Programs.  In those roles, she has supported both US Military and international programs, including as Team Lead for the Corpus Christi Army Depot Partnership and Project Manager of Israel Air Force programs.  Liz earned a Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering from Trinity College, Hartford.  She is also an active member of SWE and has served as the president of the Hartford professional section since 2007.

 

Emily Synk is Manager, Military Installations Engineering at GE Aviation.  She manages four managers and three staff engineers, located in Lynn, MA and Cincinnati, OH.  During her 17 years at GE, Emily has held various roles in control system design, engine/flight testing, first line management, and program leadership, and has managed teams through both downturns and growth cycles.  Emily is a life member of SWE and former Region F Governor, SWE-Boston president, and University of Michigan student section president.  Emily is an avid snowboarder and hiker and lives in Boston with her husband Robert.

 

Moderator Bernice Brody is an executive project manager with IBM Global Services, supporting worldwide web hosting programs and services for all IBM divisions.  She has almost 30 years of manufacturing and development engineering experience.  Bernice has served as SWE's Directory of Professional Development, Public Policy/Government Relations Task Force Chair, and New England Region Director.   She is an active member of SWE's Mid-Hudson section.  Brody holds a BS in Chemistry from St. Joseph's University.
