Session
4: Advocating for yourself in the workplace: How to
talk to your boss about what you
need
Description
In this session, you will get tips on how to negotiate for the salary
you deserve. Understand what motivates companies to adopt family-friendly
workplace programs, and learn how to make a case to your employer for what
you need. Speaker Bryn Dews is the Team Lead for the User-Centered Design
group inside of MITRE's IT division. Starting in 2000, she was the proponent
for bringing Human Factors Engineers inside IT to be part of application
development teams. She was rewarded with a team of four Human Factors
Engineers in May 2003 and the team has grown both in size and accomplishments
ever since. Prior to joining IT, Bryn worked for 16 years in various
capacities in HR. She started in Benefits, moved to Compensation and Benefits
and ended up as the HRIT Manager before moving over to the IT division at
MITRE. She has been directly managing staff for more than 20 years. After finishing her Bachelors of Business
Administration in Management at UMass, Amherst in three years, Bryn decided
to work for a while before going back to school. Twenty years later, with two
small children at home and her eye on her “next career,” she earned her
Master of Science in Computer Information Systems at Boston University’s
Metropolitan College. |
