Session 1:  Kiss, Bow, or Shake Hands: Working in a Global Company

Description

We live in a global economy with engineering teams dispersed worldwide.  Even modest companies and universities today need to correspond via e-mail, talk on the telephone, or meet with engineers and business people from around the globe. This panel will explore the cultural etiquette differences one can encounter globally in communication styles, behavior, dress, personal space and greetings, eye contact,
business cards, sense of time, commitments, and relationships.  Understanding these norms on a country by country basis can make the difference between a successful business interaction and an unsuccessful one. Misunderstandings can also make for some perplexing and humorous situations!

Panelists:

Sarah Koenig, Panel Moderator, is a supplier quality engineer at Pratt & Whitney, supporting the Italy and Switzerland global supply chain teams.  She received her BS in Industrial Engineering and her BA in French from the University of Rhode Island.  She is a SWE Life Member and currently serves as SWE Hartford’s Outreach Chair.  In her spare time, she loves trying out new recipes, travelling, and ballroom dancing.

Leslie Griffiths, IBM, is a Senior Engineer with over 25 years experience with IBM Microelectronics Division in Essex Junction, VT.  She is currently working in the Division Quality Operations group, managing the site ISO Program and is a RAB Certified Lead Assessor.  At IBM, she has worked in multiple engineering roles, including Line Support, Product Engineering and Development engineering, supporting the Bond, Assembly and Test of Semi-conductors and Cards.  In her career, she has been fortunate enough to travel to numerous countries. She received her BSME from Michigan State in 1981, and received a Master's Certificate in Project Management from George Washington University in 2000.   She is a State Problem Captain for Odyssey of the Mind, Hockey Mom, and loves to knit and go on bicycle trips with her family.  She resides in South Burlington, VT, with her husband and has three children.
