Session
1: Online Networking and SWE
Communities
Description
Are you on Facebook or LinkedIn? Are you confused by the many options for social and professional networking? Do you want to find out what the big deal is? Then this session is for you! The presenters will give an overview of some online networking sites that can help you make new connections and foster relationships to advance your career and have some fun along the way. We will profile the SWE Communities of Practice online networking communities that debuted this year. There will also be an interactive discussion. This session is intended for anyone who wants to learn how to use these sites more effectively, as well as to share your ideas and experiences. This session is open to all attendees, but will focus on use of online networking sites for professional purposes, not just social networking. Speakers: Michelle Mahoney
is a student
at Northeastern University in Boston, MA. She will be graduating in May
with a BS in Mechanical Engineering. She has had three co-op
experiences in manufacturing; two at DePuy Orthopedics, a Johnson &
Johnson Company, and the other at Foster-Miller, Inc. From these
experiences she has a strong interest in manufacturing and quality assurance
and looks to pursue a career in those areas. Michelle has been an active SWE member of the
Northeastern University chapter for the past five years while holding officer
positions as Secretary and Publicity Chair. She was also co-chair of
the career fair committee for the Region F Conference held at Northeastern
University in 2007. She is looking forward to continuing a strong
membership in the Boston Section post-graduation. Emily Synk
is past SWE New England Region Governer and Manager of Military Installations
Engineering at GE Aviation. She has
used SWE Communities of Practice and other networking sites to reestablish
connections and build new relationships.
Her aim for this session is to share what she’s learned about online
networking but to also get some tips from the audience! Kristina Cairns
has expanded her horizons and career
growth prospects by meeting new people in industries and companies of
interest by using LinkedIn as a research and introduction tool. Kristina will share how she decides whom to
introduce herself to and some tips she’s learned to encourage mutually
beneficial exchanges. Originally a
combustion engineer, Kristina has worked in gas turbines for power
generation, helicopter aviation, and explosives and narcotics detection. For each move she’s made, networking has
been a key part of getting the dialog started. |
